PDI Accomplishments as of November 2005

Recent PDI Accomplishments:

• Held orientation of pharmacy groups and other partners in saturation PDI sites (Cebu, Iloilo, Cavite)
• Completed two-day training of PDI Master Trainers
• Obtained commitment of 406 pharmacies and partners in saturation sites in signed MOUs.
• Conducted 51 training workshops for staff of new PDI pharmacy partners in saturation sites
• Formulated a PDI exit strategy (in consultation with city, provincial, and regional health officials on the integration of PDI in local health program)

PDI conducts 51 Training Batches in 3 Philippine TIPS Sites

Fifty-one training batches on TB, DOTS and PDI were conducted in 3 Philippine TIPS sites (Cavite, Cebu City, and Iloilo City) from October 2 to 20, 2005. A total of 1,442 participants representing 406 pharmacies attended the trainings. Majority (65%) of the participants were pharmacy assistants, 15% were pharmacists, 14% were management staff (including pharmacy owners), and 6% were participants sent by the PDI stakeholders (DOTS Clinic Administrators, others).

Ten-item pre and post-test exercises were given to the participants to assess the effectivity of the training. Test results show a significant increase in knowledge scores after the training, with the average pre-test score at 5.9 and the average post-test score at 7.7.

Evaluation of the training by the participants was very high with an average evaluation score of 3.6 (from a range of 1 to 4, 4 being the highest).

406 Pharmacies join PDI in 3 Philippine TIPS Sites

A total of 406 pharmacies (or 72% of the total 561) in 3 Philippine TIPS sites, Cavite, Cebu City, and Iloilo City, have joined the Pharmacy DOTS Initiative for its saturation phase (2005-2006).

All 406 pharmacies have sent their staff for PDI trainings which were conducted between October 2 and 20, 2005. These pharmacies will participate in the PDI operations at the pharmacy level which include: a) implementation of the ‘no-prescription no-TB drug’ policy, b)pre-screening of TB suspects, c) information-giving on TB and DOTS, d)IEC distribution, e) adherence monitoring of those with prescription and f) referral of TB symptomatics to DOTS clinics.
